The Engineering Practice Laboratorie consist of Fitting, Plumbing and Electrical wiring. It caters to the requisites of the Engineering Practice Laboratories as per the syllabus and curriculum of Directorate of Technical Education, Chennai. The Engineering Practice Laboratories are also used for the fabrication of Projects by the final year students.
Manufacturing Process Laboratory:
The Manufacturing Process Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department was instituted in the year 2009-2010 and invested 80 lakhs at Guru Raagavindra Polytechnic College. The Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory consists of Welding and Foundry sections. It caters to the requisites of the Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory as per the syllabus and curriculum of Directorate of Technical Education, Chennai. . Experiments performed in the Welding shop include Single V-butt joint, double lap joint and T joint. The Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory is also used for fabrication of Projects by the final year students .
Special Machines laboratory:
Special machine Lab of the Department was established in the year 2009-2010 and invested 1.2 cores. The classes offered by this Lab aim to provide the students with practical knowledge in basic manufacturing processes that could be performed in standard machines such as Shaping, Milling, Slotting, Ginding and allied machines. The practical classes provide opportunity for the students to learn the methods to machine the models to the desired accuracy and quality. The emphasis throughout the laboratory course will be on understanding the basic features of the processes and acquiring machining to operate the machines. At the end of the semester, the student will be capable of demonstrating the various basic operations such as Shaping square blocks, Machining single point cutting tools, Machining key ways, Machining spur and helical worm gears, Milling polygon surfaces, Measuring cutting tool forces, Drilling and Tapping.
CAD Laboratory:
CAD Lab of the Department was established in the year 2009-2010 and invested 12.6 lakhs for concept design and product realization. This lab primarily facilitates students to evolve concepts and convert them into complete real products. The lab includes 60 systems with i5 processors, 8 GB RAMs, 1GB Graphics Card, 1TB Hard Disk, advanced CAD software packages, and rapid prototyping equipment. The process of design, simulation and prototyping takes place in a digitally integrated environment. The facility has been designed and structured to take care of professional certification programs for the students, consultancy for industries and also to carry out globally outstanding research in Design and Development.
Thermal Engineering Laboratory:
Thermal Engineering Lab of the Department wais established in the year 2009-2010 and invested 17.52 lakhs. Thermal Engineering is a broad field of Engineering that encompasses Technologies dealing with heating and cooling systems transfer of heat etc.. The objective of this laboratory is to provide the students a good environment to understand some very significant concepts and applications in the field of IC engines. Using a combined approach of theoretical analysis, numerical calculations and experimental investigations, the thermal laboratory aims to develop new or advanced knowledge for applications in Industrial design.
Metrology and Metallographic Laboratory:
The Metrology and Metallographic Lab of the Department was established in the year 2009-2010 and invested 9.57 lakhs. The Metallographic Laboratory comprises of major equipments like Inverted Metallurgical Microscope, Specimen cutting Machine, Specimen Mounting Machine. The objective of conducting the practical classes in the laboratory is to develop skills to metallurgical characteristic .Apart from conducting the practical classes, the Lab facilities are effectively utilized for the development of project and research works by the final year students. In Metrology laboratory the following equipment are available. Surface plates, Angle plates, Vernier calipers, Vernier height gauges, Vernier depth gauges, Inside & Outside micrometers, Snap gauges, Ring gauges, Plug gauges, Feeler gauges, Radius gauges, Pitch screw gauges, Slip gauge sets, Dial indicators, Sine bars, Angle gauge sets, Auto collimator, Floating carriage micro meters, Optical comparators, Tool maker micro scopes, Optical profile projectors, Gear tooth vernier and surface finish measuring instruments. This laboratory covers areas of linear & angular measurements, limits, fits and gauges, comparators, screw thread measurements, gear measurements, surface finish measurements. The students should observe these instruments carefully and study the operation of each instrument and their detailed specifications. Proper care should be taken while handling these instruments. The Metrology laboratory is expected to maintain at 20°C temperature conditions. The parameter for surface finish measurement prescribed in the standards is based on stylus type instrument. We have Surface roughness tester with the accuracy of 3.79 micron by the Mitutoyo make.
